Welcome to 4FOMLIG Seoul 2026
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 4th Workshop on the Future of Machine Learning in Geotechnics, 4FOMLIG Seoul, held at Dongguk University in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
The rapid development of artificial intelligence is transforming the way we understand, analyze, design, and manage geotechnical systems. In response to this transformation, researchers associated with ISSMGE Technical Committee TC304 on Risk Assessment and Management and TC309 on Machine Learning and Big Data launched the Future of Machine Learning in Geotechnics (FOMLIG) initiative in 2021. Following the successful workshops held in Japan, China, and Italy, we are honored to host the fourth workshop in Seoul.
The central objective of 4FOMLIG Seoul is to strengthen the connection between the construction industry and the geotechnical research community in the era of artificial intelligence. This year’s workshop places particular emphasis on how AI and machine learning are currently being applied—and further developed—across geotechnical software, engineering design, construction practice, and infrastructure management.
Under the themes of Intelligence, Integration, and Innovation, the workshop provides an international platform for researchers, practitioners, software developers, and industry leaders to exchange knowledge, share practical experience, and explore emerging challenges and opportunities. Topics range from AI-enhanced numerical modeling and data-driven decision-making to construction automation, intelligent monitoring, and digitally integrated infrastructure systems.
The program has been carefully structured to promote both technical learning and meaningful interaction between academia and industry.
The workshop begins with the GEO-AI One-Day Class, designed for geotechnical engineers who are beginning to explore the fundamentals and practical applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
The industry-focused program features invited presentations by leading practitioners and specialists from organizations including Hyundai E&C, Seequent, Autodesk, AECOM, Dohwa Engineering, the Korea Expressway Corporation, and KIOST. The speakers will share their perspectives on how AI is transforming engineering and construction practice and how the industry envisions the future of the geotechnical profession.
These presentations will be followed by the 8th Machine Learning in Geotechnics Dialog, which will provide an opportunity for experts from industry and academia to engage in deeper discussion on the practical implementation, future development, and responsible use of AI in geotechnical engineering.
The academic sessions will present the latest international research and technological advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence for geotechnics. We are also delighted to host two outstanding young researchers who will deliver the ISSMGE Bright Spark Lectures, together with presentations by the winners of the Student Challenges generously supported by Kajima Corporation and Shimizu Corporation.
The true value of FOMLIG lies not only in technical excellence but also in open dialogue and lasting collaboration. We therefore encourage all participants to exchange ideas freely, challenge conventional assumptions, and establish new connections with colleagues from around the world.
We sincerely hope that 4FOMLIG Seoul will provide an inspiring and rewarding experience—one that generates new insights, strengthens partnerships between academia and industry, and helps define future directions for machine learning in geotechnical engineering.
